Unsolved Tracking Mysteries- The case of the strange 'Rainbow Arcs'. We came upon these odd marks in the snow the other day. Take a look, then read the Field Notes below for extra clues. If you think you have a solution, let us know!
Field Notes: I put my glove down next to the tracks to give you a sense of size. The tracks near the tree could have been from a squirrel, and it's certainly possible that the arcs near the tree were made by the squirrel's tail. But the real mystery are the arcs farther from the tree. How did those get there, and what made them? They weren't near any overhanging branches or other tracks -- just these strange arcs, very similar to the ones near the tree, but right in the middle of the snow. This was in a mixed deciduous forest near a small creek, and the tracks were found at about noon. It had snowed the night before, and it was about 20 degrees F outside on an overcast day.
